An intelligence driven operation, carried out by the SAPS specialized Anti-Smuggling Unit, resulted in the successful arrest of a 39-year-old suspect, linked to a cross-border smuggling ring.

The suspect was intercepted intercepted in the early hours of Friday, 15 March 2024, along the N1 South road in Westenburg policing area. A Toyota Prado, reportedly hijacked in Randfontein, was recovered.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the vehicle was hijacked on 12 March 2024 and was meant to be smuggled into Zimbabwe through the Beitbridge border post.

It was further established that the suspect is already facing a similar charge after he was recently caught trying to smuggle a stolen motor vehicle into Mozambique through the Lembobo border post.

The suspect is currently in custody and is expected to appear before Polokwane Magistrate's Court on March 18, 2024, facing charges of possession of presumed stolen motor vehicle and possession of fraudulent documents.
